The
great works of Bosch, Brueghel, El Greco, Goya, Murillo, Ribera,
Titian, Rubens, Van Dyck, Velázquez and Zurbarán, should be enough
for any art lover, but these are just the top of the iceberg of
famous names that can be seen in the "Museo del Prado". The Queen
Isabel of Bragança and the wife of King Ferdinand VII, was the
inspiration for this great collection and it was in 1819 that it
became the home for its public display. The collection was further
extended by the integration in 1870 of the works from the "Museo de
la Trinidad". The Prado contains the largest collection of Spanish
paintings in the world covering the period of the 11th to the 18th
Century. During the Civil War over two thousand of its finest
paintings were sent to Geneva for safekeeping.
The museum also houses outstanding works by painters from other
countries. Particularly impressive are the works from the Flemish
School with Rubens well represented with his "Three Graces" and 70
other works by his hand. From the Italian School there are more than
600 works by period Italian painters. The treasure acquired by
Prince Philip V as an inheritance that includes elaborate carved
glasses, tableware, jewellery and pieces of furniture are again part
of this immense exhibit. The collection is so large that it is said
that a month's visit to the Museum will barely do justice!

The
world renowned painting of "Guernica" painted by Picasso is to be
seen here hanging in the royal ballroom. This tribute to the small
Basque town after which is named suffered a saturation bombing from
the German Legion in the Civil War. It is questionable whether
General Franco was ever informed prior to it happening but his
propaganda machine was forced to make a weak excuse about the
Republicans planting bombs in their own cellars! Picasso has
captured on canvas his personal representation of the story that can
be taken as a statement about mankind.
